Schools that Welcome People with Disabilities

Melissa was lead trainer and a curriculum developer for federal National Access to Public Schools Project. Through it, she trained school administrators in their obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504 and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). Now, she can work with your school district to make it more welcoming to students, employees, parents and members of the public with disabilities by:

  • Providing training in ADA/ADA Amendments Act compliance to school districts
  • Explaining how Federal disability laws such as ADA, ADAAA, IDEA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act interact with each other and what you may have to do to comply with them all
  • Conducting access surveys of school buildings and explaining which schools may and may not be required to be accessible under the law
  • Developing Federally Required Self-Evaluations and Transition Plans to School Districts
  • Negotiating Federal ADA complaints
  • Providing Disability Awareness Training to school district administrators, faculty, staff and students so that all can be completely comfortable when interacting with students, employees, parents and members of the public with disabilities

Bullying and Harassment

Melissa also works with schools to curtail bullying and harassment involving students with disabilities by:
  • Providing anti-disability based bullying/harassment training  to teachers, administrators, students and parents
  • Providing parents and Individualized Education Plan (IEP) team members training in utilizing the IEP to mitigate bullying and harassment
  • Assisting schools in creating All Abilities Alliances. These are groups comprised of students and staff with and without disabilities whose goal is to foster inclusion of students with disabilities and increase awareness of disability issues.
